On Sunday, June 12, 2016, High Five Co-op members Terry Davis and Elena Bridges spent the day at Final Gravity Brewing Company with owners Kevin and Michael Christensen brewing “Asimina”, a Saison using the Pawpaw fruit. The name for the beer is derived from the Pawpaw’s scientific name, Asimina Triloba. Mike, Kevin, and Terry chose to use the fruit after learning that it is native to Michigan with its creamy, custard-like flesh and its unique complex combination of tropical fruit flavors. They are most commonly described as tasting like banana, combined with mango, pineapple, melon, berries, or other fruit. These flavors pair well with the Saison style and was chosen to be served at Michigan Brewer’s Guild Summer Beer Fest on July 22nd and 23rd in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
For High Five Co-op, this was the second opportunity to collaborate with Final Gravity. In January 2015, Cynthia Cooper, Arick Hopper, and Terry Davis joined Kevin and Michael to create “Final-Five Resolution” – Hot chocolate Milk Stout with toasted marshmallow for the Michigan Winter Beer Fest.
Final Gravity Brewing Company is located at 103 N. Phelps St, Decatur, MI 49045. Owners, father and son team, Kevin and Michael Christensen have been in business for 2 years at this location, but have been brewing beer for a combined total of 28 years. Due to the success of the brewery, they have purchased the building across the street and will be extending their brewing operations. Some favorite beers to try are Mojito Pale Ale, Uranus on Fire, BA Eye Opener, The Rock, and Simcoe Sessions. You can see what’s currently on tap by clicking here: Final Gravity Live Beer Menu.
